It is with great sadness that the Department announces the passing of Dr. John W. Hunt, MBP Professor Emeritus on October 21, 2023 in his 94th year.
As a dedicated member of MBP for many years, Dr. Hunt made numerous contributions to the Department and was able to maintain CIHR funding for over 30 years. He was so successful that MRC (as it was called at the time) invited him to Ottawa for a celebration. Throughout his time at MBP, he mentored numerous graduate students and his research helped shape the field of medical physics in Canada and around the world. In addition to ground-breaking studies of the interactions of radiation with matter, John was the first Toronto PI to develop ultrasound technology for applications in imaging and therapeutics. John’s vision brought us to today where Toronto is a powerhouse in ultrasound with over 350 students, faculty, staff, and industry partners actively involved in the field.
Our deepest condolences go out to John’s family, friends and colleagues. He will be deeply missed by the Medical Biophysics community.
A celebration of life will take place at 3 pm on Monday, October 30th, 2023, at Christie Gardens Apartments & Care Auditorium, 600 Melita Crescent, Toronto (Dupont St. and Christie St.).
