The 2019 James Lepock Memorial (JLM) Student Research Symposium was held on Thursday, May 30th at the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning.

This annual student-led initiative, organized by the Medical Biophysics Graduate Student Association, fosters scientific debate across disciplines, streams and institutes. The Symposium commemorates the significant research contributions of the Dr. James Lepock, a former MBP faculty member, and provides opportunities for MBP students to present their research in a conference setting.

The day featured a student research showcase in the form of scientific posters, which were presented in sessions throughout the event. Oral presentations were also made by MBP MSc students Jordan Fliss, Safa Majeed, Pamela Psarianos and Paige Smith, as well as presentations from MBP PhD candidates Ramy Ayoub, Vinayak Bhandari, Mehran Karimzadeh and Ryan Oglesby. Presentations were assessed by MBP faculty and the strongest presenter was recognized with a merit award at the reception following the event. Pamela Psarianos of Dr. Fei-Fei Liu’s lab was named the winner for best oral presentation for her talk titled ‘FOXO1: A Metabolic Target for the Reversal of Radiation Fibrosis.’

The event also featured opening remarks by MBP Chair Dr. Thomas Kislinger, a lecture by MBP Assistant Professor Dr. Meghan O’Reilly, a special talk by a representative from Geneseeq, an organization specalizing in genomic profiling, and an inspriational keynote address by Dr. Michael Goldberg, CEO of STIMIT.

Students enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their work, answer questions and engage in lively discussions about their research with colleagues, while faculty found the event to be an excellent vehicle to mentor students and learn about graduate research being conducted in our extremely diverse department.
