We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Flavia Venetucci Gouveia, Assistant Professor, to the Department of Medical Biophysics.
Dr. Gouveia is a neuroscientist who leads a translational research program at SickKids, focused on developing novel therapies for pediatric brain disorders. Her work integrates advanced neuroimaging techniques, including ultra-high-field MRI, with neuromodulation approaches such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) and focused ultrasound (FUS) to investigate brain circuits and translate preclinical discoveries into innovative treatments for neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions. Dr. Gouveia earned her PhD in Neuroscience through a joint program between Hospital Sírio-Libanês in Brazil and McGill University. Before becoming a Scientist at SickKids, she was a Research Fellow at Sunnybrook Research Institute and the Neuroscience and Mental Health program at SickKids, contributing to pioneering neuromodulation studies. At SickKids, she co-led the establishment of Canada’s first preclinical MR-guided FUS system within an 11.7T MRI at MICe, a nationally unique platform for precision neuromodulation research. Her research has been recognized with the Brain Canada Rising Star in Autism Research Award, supported by over $7 million in competitive funding, and has resulted in more than 60 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Gouveia is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists, with a strong track record of mentoring students from underrepresented groups and building collaborative projects across disciplines.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Gouveia to the Department of Medical Biophysics.
