The application process after all components of your
online SGS application have been received:
Only complete applications will be forwarded to the Admissions Committee for
evaluation. Applications will be circulated to recruiting faculty for review.
Select applicants will be contacted for interviews with faculty members as
well as several members of the Graduate Admission Committee. The purpose of
the interview stage is to determine your admissibility into our Department
and to identify a suitable supervisor, if accepted. All interviewers will submit
an evaluation of you, which will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee. The
final admission outcome can take 4-8 weeks from the date that your application
is deemed complete on the SGS online system. For international applicants,
the complete process may exceed 8 weeks.
What is the format of the interview?
Interview(s) are scheduled for a half day to full day between 9:00 am – 5:00
pm. On the interview day, you will meet with our Graduate Administrator,
potential supervisors and Graduate Admissions Committee members. Each interview
is approximately 25 – 40 minutes. We will also arrange for a graduate
student to meet you for lunch. This will give you an opportunity to ask any
questions you may have about the program and/or MBP graduate life.
Please note that the interviews do not guarantee entry into the department.
Rotation streams:
All biology stream (Cell and Molecular Biology & Molecular
and Structural Biology) Masters students (PHD students optional) starting
their programme in September 2010 will be participating in lab rotations. Rotations
provide an opportunity for the student to try out several labs. In
addition to ensuring a better match between the student, supervisor and project,
rotations expose new students to different kinds of research and distinct facilities,
which will be advantageous when a lab is eventually chosen.
If you are admitted to the department, you will be matched with three different
supervisors, one for each rotation.
The three rotations will be completed in the fall term, September to December. Each
rotation is for five weeks. When all three rotations are completed in December,
you will submit your choices of preferred labs. If the top-ranked supervisor
agrees that it is a good match, you continue in that lab in January. Please
have a look at the FAQ section for more information.
Rotations are currently
not offered to applicants applying to the Medical Physics stream.
